ChatGPT and AI Images to SVG: How to Vectorize AI Art
Image generators give you raster files, usually PNG or JPG. They look fine on screen but they are pixels, so they blur when enlarged and they cannot go straight into a cutting machine. Tracing them to SVG fixes that.
Prompt for something that traces well
You get a much better SVG if the picture is made for it. Ask for:
- A flat vector style, solid colors, no gradients
- A plain white or solid background
- Bold shapes and thick lines instead of fine texture
- Few colors, such as two to five
- No tiny text, since generators often garble letters anyway
Soft shading, glow and photographic lighting all turn into messy patches when traced.
Upload at the highest resolution you can
Download the largest version the generator offers. A bigger source gives the tracer smoother edges to follow.
Trace it
Drop the image into the image to SVG converter. Start with the Logo or icon style for flat art, and Black and white if you plan to cut it. Set the color count to the number of colors you can actually see.
Compare against the original with the slider. AI art often has stray specks and slightly fuzzy edges, so raise Remove small specks and Soften if you see noise.
Clean up before you use it
AI images often include odd artifacts: a stray dot, an unfinished line, a sliver of background. Open the SVG in Inkscape or Illustrator and delete what you do not want. That is quick because each color is one path.
Cutting machines and lasers
For a Cricut or similar cutter, use a single dark color, simple shapes and no hairline details. See the SVG for Cricut page. Laser software often prefers DXF, which you can make with PNG to DXF.
A note on rights
Check the terms of the generator you used before selling products made from its images. Rules differ between services and change over time.
