How to use it
- Drop in a .gif file.
- Choose a style. Logo or icon suits most GIF graphics.
- Compare the trace with the original and adjust colors and smoothing.
- Download the SVG.
GIFs trace well
A GIF holds at most 256 flat colors, so the edges are already clean and the tracer has little noise to deal with. Icons, buttons, clip art and old web graphics usually convert with a low color count and default smoothing.
For an animated GIF, the first frame is traced. If you want a different frame, save it as a PNG first and use the PNG to SVG converter.
What the settings do
- Colors
- Start low. Most GIF graphics need 4 to 8 colors.
- Smoothing
- Higher values give cleaner curves and a smaller file.
- Make white background transparent
- Clears the white box around GIF artwork.
What people use it for
- Old web graphics and buttons that need to scale
- Clip art saved as GIF
- Turning a GIF logo into something editable
Questions
What happens to an animated GIF?
Only the first frame is traced, and you get one SVG.
Does it keep GIF transparency?
Transparent areas stay empty in the SVG.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Tracing and file creation happen in your browser, using code that is part of this page. Your image is not sent to a server. You can check this in your browser's network tab while you use the tool.
