How to Make Cricut Stickers from a Photo or Drawing

Cricut stickers come in two kinds, and the right file is different for each.

Two kinds of stickers

Print then cut. You print a full-color design, and the machine cuts around it. This uses a regular image, usually PNG, with a cut outline added in Design Space. You do not need an SVG trace for this.

Cut-only vinyl stickers. The machine cuts solid shapes out of colored vinyl. This needs an SVG made of clean shapes, and that is where tracing helps.

Making a cut-only design from a photo or drawing

  1. Pick a simple picture. A silhouette, a bold drawing, a monogram or a logo works. Detailed photos do not.
  2. Trace in black and white first. Open the SVG for Cricut page, drop in the image and use the Black and white style.
  3. Move the threshold until the shapes are solid and the background is clean.
  4. Raise Remove small specks and Smoothing. Fewer tiny shapes means faster cuts and easier weeding.
  5. Download the SVG and upload it in Design Space.

For a photo-style look

A photo to SVG trace with a few colors gives a poster look you can cut as layers. Keep it to a handful of colors. Each color is one layer of vinyl, so more colors means more work.

Before you cut

Why simple shapes win

A cutter follows every outline. Hundreds of tiny shapes mean a slow cut, torn vinyl and a frustrating weeding session. Clean, bold shapes are almost always the better sticker.
